What's Your "Thing"?

I know people who think going on Facebook is stupid; and Renaissance Faires are ridiculous; and Letterboxing is childish; and dancing is a waste of time; and anything Science Fiction should be dumped in the trash; and no one looks good in orange; and short hair on women is unattractive; and computer games are for idiots; and art is boring. In other words, they look down on me because I enjoy those things.

I have my own list of "those are stupid (or pointless or boring)" things that other people like to do. And for the most part, I keep my lip zipped on my judgemental opinion around them BECAUSE I know they enjoy it and BECAUSE I know what feels like to be sneered at for liking something.

So before you get all self righteous about a new craze and share snarky memes, ask yourself....what is YOUR Pokeman GO?

We all have a "thing", even if it isn't Pikachu.

Insert Appropriate Post Title Here

I guess it's been a rough year.  Didn't realize it's been that long since I posted anything.  We haven't done much letterboxing (we haven't done much of anything really), and I don't know if that is going to change anytime soon.  I still check Atlas Quest everyday, I still compile lists of boxes to find when we take a trip and we eek out a find once in a while.  But isn't that the way life goes?  Ups and downs.  Roller coasters.  Mountains.  Bottomless pits.  Whatevers.  I'm making changes in my life.  I hope letterboxing doesn't become something that I once did.  That would make me sad.

This is my sad face  :'-(

Nice People

I have become a rather cynical (dare I say bitter) old bitch as I have gotten older. Pain, disappointment and betrayal will do that to you.  I see myself going down this unhappy, but most of the time amusing, road.  Then along comes a Nice Person.  Well dadgummit, you just ruined it, didn't you?
I planted a letterbox in Hawaii a couple of years ago, in a very urban, busy, indoor location.  I didn't expect it to last long.  I had such a wonderful time that trip, I got to see my brother and his family for the first time in 10 years (they live in Germany)  I got to meet my very first great-niece and see my niece (her husband was stationed there) being a fantastic mother.  I went with my sister who I hadn't gone on a trip with in a million years, and we got along the WHOLE time.  Plus.... I was in Hawaii!  So, this box has a little bit of a special meaning to me.  I didn't expect it to be visited so much, to the point I was getting notes saying the log book was getting full.  My niece has since moved on to Georgia, so I couldn't ask her to help out.  I figured why not just ask a fellow boxer who lives in the city and who has found the box already.  I contacted Morgan Family Hunters introducing myself and asking if they would send me the box, then replace it when I send it back.  SMACK!   I ran right into a Nice Person.  Not only was she happy to help out, she told me what that box means to them.  Oh, the warm fuzzies peeked out of my bitter heart.  Quick as a flash she sent it to me with a lovely, lovely note and a package of chocolate covered macadamia nuts.  Don't get me wrong, the candy was a sweet touch, but the note was better.  It reminded me that Yes, Virginia, There is Such a Thing as Nice People.  Lookee, warm fuzzies exploding all over!  I'm almost finished with the box and I will send it back to her and it will once again be in place.  But no sweet treat I send back to her can compete with the gentle uplift she has given me...simply by being nice.

There are even fuzzies in my navel.

He Always Called Me "Doll"

On or about 1950, Mr. and Mrs. Gotelli decided to settle down and raise a family.  They picked a house in a new subdivision south of The City.  They ran their business, worked hard, raised a family and retired.  Life shuffled along as it does, neighbors moved in, moved out, passed away, had kids etc.  Mr. Gotelli was a bossy, nosy guy.  He had no problem telling anyone what's what, and he did so frequently.  Everyone knew him, he knew everyone.  He watched out for all the neighbors, told them when kids were throwing rocks at their cars, questioned the friends who would come by and feed pets while the neighbors were on vacation, alerted them when their back yard was on fire, wheeled in their garbage cans when they were too overwhelmed with caring for their wife who had cancer, yelled at them when they would park their to-many-cars so that driveways were blocked.  When Mrs. Gotelli died he told his neighbor that every morning he would go to the cemetery to visit her grave and yell at her for leaving him.  He doesn't have to do that anymore.  On Tuesday he will finally get to settle in next to her and neither one will be alone anymore.  The Mr. Gotelli shaped hole in the neighborhood is pretty big, about the same size as the one that's in my heart, but not as big as the one that is in my husband's. No more morning updates on the way out to work.  No more anything.  The S of GremLandS wants me to make a letterbox in his honor and plant it in the cemetery.  I will do it.  I can't think of anything at the moment that will do justice to the unofficial Mayor of our street.  But I will do it.

It's a Win-Win Situation

Got a new car, real live new car, the first NEW new car I've ever had.  I am now a moss covered hamster.  Can you figure out what car it is by that hint?  If you get it right, maybe I'll send you something...like a stamp I carved but never planted.

This Is Me Trying to Let Go

A few days ago a friend helped me plant a LB that was part of a "Memorial Plant Day" for a boxer called preboxed who died recently from cancer.  I don't know what kind she had, but I hate every form it takes.  Guess it has stirred some stuff up, this is what I just wrote on my Facebook page.  I'm putting it here too because "This is me trying to let go."

It's been probably 7 years since she died.  They played "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" by Israel Kamakawiwo'Ole at her memorial.  I break down every time I hear it...still.  I also don't talk about it.  So...this is me trying to let go.
Patricia was my "cohort".  We were in a breast cancer support group together, it was part of a study to see what type of therapy is most beneficial to breast cancer patients, regular group vs. variety (group, art therapy, education, yoga, etc.)  After the initial study was over, she was the only I kept in touch with over time.  She kept in touch with everyone, she was the glue.  I went to a "Survivors Day" in GGP with a friend and met her there, because she was a fierce survivor and wanted to celebrate it.  Even when she had a recurrence.  The last time I saw her was several months before she died.  I met her at Kaiser and sat through a chemo drip with her.  We laughed and talked and talked and talked.  I talked with her on AOL for a while after that, but then she became quiet.  Then I got the email from her partner saying that she had died.  For about 6 months after her screen name would still pop up on the IM thingy they had then.  Every time, my gut reaction would be to smile and think "Hi Patricia!"...then I  would remember and realize it was her partner, taking care of the business of life.
I went to her memorial alone.  Steven can't go to things like that, it hits too close to home for him, but I needed to go.  I was in pain with muscle spasms and in a mental fog.  Patricia.  Dead.  Damn.  I sat in the back of the Swedenborgen Church in SF and listened and cried and held hands with the strangers on either side of me.  Then I tucked it all in the back of my head and went on with life.  Until I would hear THAT song.  Then it all comes back, every time, just as strong, and I don't tell anyone.  Until now.  I miss my friend, Patricia.  I am afraid, too.   When will that be me?  Because someday, it will.  And no amount of good intentioned "get hit by a bus" pep talks people give doesn't change the fact that one of my "buses" has already turned the corner and is heading towards me and all I can do is hope I've gotten out of the way in time.

I haven't bought a ticket anyway.

Just Keep Swimming, Just Keep Swimming

Hmmm, should I carve some stamps and put them up on Etsy?  I think I'm a decent carver, but would anyone really want to buy them?  I guess I'm not the only one with that idea (dang it!).  The other stamps I've seen there have ranged from exceedingly simple to quite beautiful.  I dunno.  Is it worth it?  I know carving can give me migraines.  But I like doing it.  Gak.  Some days I tell myself to just put my head down and keep trudging along.  It's not enough and I need to exercise that creative outlet.
Boxing has taken a back seat to "the business of life".  We kind of hit a plateau with planting...hit one with finding too.   Okay, now I'm rambling.   Which made me remember Steve Martin's song Ramblin' Man.  Can't find the lyrics but did come across Grandmothers Song:

Be courteous, kind and forgiving,
Be gentle and peaceful each day,
Be warm and human and grateful,
And have a good thing to say.

Be thoughtful and trustful and childlike,
Be witty and happy and wise,
Be honest and love all your neighbors,
Be obsequious, purple, and clairvoyant.

Be pompous, obese, and eat cactus,
Be dull, and boring, and omnipresent,
Criticize things you don't know about,
Be oblong and have your knees removed.

Be tasteless, rude, and offensive,
Live in a swamp and be three dimensional,
Put a live chicken in your underwear,
Get all excited and go to a yawning festival.

Welcome to my world!

If Not Now, When?

Ding, ding, ding, ding!  Hands in the air!  Success!  Soopahstah!

Hmmm, maybe that was overkill.  I'm just happy that my stash of stamps is being evicted and set loose in the world.  We have done a rash of plantings lately so I'm happy about that.  BUT (ya gotta know, there is always a but), I still have five stamps that are ready to go.  One I know exactly where it's going but we had some technical difficulties over the weekend.  Frustrating.  Mainly because I carved that stamp OVER A YEAR AGO.  Geesh.  And it's one of my favorite ones too.
One of the first stamps I ever carved (I think it was the third one) is still not planted.  Tried a couple of times but no joy.  Can't seem to find the right spot in the rather urban area I want it to go.  Oops, I forgot about the recarve for my former "blue diamond" series.  We've tried 4 times to replant that one...I think it's jinxed.
Oh lordy, then there is the one I'm still carving.  An elaborate scene, very fiddly, not sure if it will come out looking good or not.  AND  I have one image ready to be transfered and carved.  AND AND I have one stamp that is languishing because I want  it to be an indoor plant but haven't gotten up the courage to approach the owners of the shop.
Sheesh, you'd think I like to carve stamps or something.......I have insomnia.

Too Many To Count

Well, not really...I am prone hyperbole.  I just finished a letterbox to plant.  Was this cause for joy and celebration?  Yes and no.  I love the feeling of putting those final touches on the box and knowing it is good to go.  I know where I want to plant it.  Not the EXACT location for the box, but the place I want to take people.  So that is the "yes" part.  The "no" part is that this little box now joins an ever growing pile of completed boxes clamoring to be planted.
I have no real excuse or reason.  The weather's been fine, there has been time available.  What's the hitch???  The short answer is:  me.  The long answer is:  I have discovered I get a little particular (or as it is said in the modern vernacular:  anal) when it come to planting.  The place has to be appropriate to the box... the actual spot needs to be accessible but discrete... exposure both to prying eyes and the elements has to be considered.   Are all these things ABSOLLUTLY necessary?  The short answer is: no.  The long answer is:  apparently in my mind, yes.  (Okay, that is not really a long answer, but it is more than the first monosyllabic one.  Semantics, semantics!)  This is not to mention the stamps in progress, plus the ones in my head, not to mention the spots picked but no stamp image in mind yet.
I'm not sure how to get over this hurdle, but I better figure it out soon or I will be overwhelmed with waiting boxes.  Although I suppose there are worse things in the world to contend with.  Or is this just another case of "kitty mittens"!?

I kinda care, but kinda don't...

One of my plants is a series in the Sunset district in SF.  I had bought some funky carving material and figured I'd do a "throw away" planting (meaning that if they disappeared I wouldn't recarve/replant).  It was an experiment for myself also, not just a standard stamp...something for folks to play with.  Well, it turned out to be "blue diamond" rated.  I was totally surprised and kind of pleased.  So, when I found out one was missing, of course I recarved and have been trying to replant (there are some issues hindering a speedy re-do).  In the meantime, I "lost" the blue diamond rating.  I was surprisingly disappointed, I didn't think I cared that much since I wasn't that attached to that series anyway.  I find myself amused at my vacillations.  "I thought that series wasn't one of your favorites?"  "It isn't, but I liked the ego boost of having a blue diamond."  "But it was a "throw away"."  "It was until everyone turned out to like it."  "Well, is it or isn't it?  Are you or aren't you?"  "I kinda care, but kinda don't..."

Crossing my eyes....

Team Bad Wolf t-shirts---check!
Gatorade---check!
Decoder ring---check!
Clues---check!
Special siggy stamp---check!
Know the universal speed limit---check!
Both eyes blink---check!
Ibuprofen---check!
Spell---check!
Hey, that was an unintended pun.  I didn't know it until I re-read it. ;-)  That being said, time to get back to the unchecked things on the list.  Time to dot some i's and cross some t's.  Or else put some drops in my eyes and have a cup of tea.

Old Dog

I carved a stamp for someone today.  Well okay, I finished it today.  This it the 4th time I've carved for someone else using a theme I did not choose myself.  But it was different this time.  This was a very specific stamp and while I loved carving it, it was most certainly not in my usual genre.  It is very architectual, I had to have my nephew help me with the perspective as I am a very 2D carver still.  I would have never done something like that on my own and as I sat carving those little straight (ish) lines I was happy.  Happy to be pushed to try something new.  Happy to see it form up fairly well.  Happy to learn.  I think I am a perpetual student at heart, I love learning new things when I can.  I would hope to think that I am one of those old dogs who CAN learn new tricks.  I am not the person I was 10 years ago, not the person I was 20 years ago, for better or for worse I have changed, I hope it continues.

Non sum qualis eram.

Who knew?

There was a tiny round park buried in Burlingame?
There was such a thing as a Wave Organ?
There was a cemetery smack in the middle of Honolulu?
There were Lions in Sutro Park?
Was a columbarium was?
You could buy pirate supplies?
There were stairs to nowhere in the middle of nowhere?
There were once zeppelins in SF?
The old house that was turned into a school where they filmed a movie was attended by someone I just met and by someone my mother taught in kindergarten at a different school?

Who knew?  I sure didn't.

Funny!

I was playing around on Facebook today and found a silly "game" called SmallWorlds. I don't know all the lingo, so forgive me if I sound distinctly non-tech. So, it's a game where you have an avatar and can wander around doing and buying things. (Seems to be lots of young 'uns chatting each other up.) There are these things called Missions where you have to follow the instructions given and you get points, etc. I randomly clicked on one called something like EllaMoor something-something. And danged if it wasn't all about geo-caching and letterboxing. I had to laugh (or would that be LOL?) when one of the things you have to make your avatar say is "What is letterboxing?"

Blind Leading The Blind

So, my sister says she is coming up from the LA area to visit during her spring break. In those handful of days she'll be here, we will: go lbing, have tea and go to yarn shops. Doesn't sound like a very packed schedule, does it? Muah, ha, ha, ha, ha! How little you know! I forsee stops at AT LEAST two tearooms, perhaps three. I know of a minimum of 23 appropriate boxes I can escort her to so she can break in her boxing teeth. And even though there is only one yarn store on the docket right now, the bubble tea place is just a block away so a visit there is vital, too. I wonder what the final count will be when she leaves? I better start training right now, I only have a couple of weeks to get in shape! Think I'll start with the tea drinking aspect...

Corrupter

I carved a stamp for my sister recently. She wants to get into lbing after I introduced her to it in Hawaii. I told her I'd carve her a siggy stamp, what did she want? She said OH how about the two of us in the ocean? (We managed to play in the waves a little, we were horribly goofy and amused ourselves silly.) I bravely said sure, the two of us in the ocean. Inside, I was thinking how on earth am I going to do that? The majority of my carves are not my own artwork, I find it on line...clipart and the like. Uh oh, gotta be creative. I found a clipart of a woman surfing. A little bit of editing, a little bit of adding, a little bit of reversing and dang if I didn't end up with a cute little stamp! I am pleased, it turned out better than I hoped and I am more proud of it because it wasn't just "gouge by number" (don't get me wrong, I love carving that way, much pretty stamps.) At this point, only three of my planted boxes are my own "artwork", five are a combo of techniques and the rest are images I've found.

Big Brother

My brother is stopping by for two days before he and his wife fly back to Germany. When I saw them a week or so ago in Hawaii for our little family reunion (his daughter now lives there) I had to let them in on my new hobby. Not surprising, he found it interesting at first. But when I hunted down my first out-of-state box he didn't participate and just sat on a bench (fairly far away) with his wife. I guess it just seemed silly to them. My sister however was VERY interested and went on two more hunts with me before we left. Back to present, big brother and wife are wanting to go to the outlet mall in Vacaville (I've already been in that area), I have now suggested Petaluma because it would be a nicer drive, etc. Part of me thought, hey I could check out boxes in the area! But I have discovered, gosh I don't like sharing something I enjoy with people who don't seem to enjoy it. Takes all the fun out of it. Part of me also wonders, if my brother would actually get a kick out of it. He's a big goof, like me and my sister. Oh well, guess I'll never know.

A New Chapter

I've been through many chapters in my life. The latest chapter is ending soon, I am "abdicating" the throne as Mary, Queen of Scots with a small faire circuit guild. For seven years I've played that role and this is the year it ends. To commemorate this, I planted a Letterbox (a new hobby to embark on!) with some friends who work the circuit. They travel to many different events and unbeknownst (I can't hear that word and not think of Jeff Conway from Celebrity Rehab.) to me, they are 'boxers, too. Small world, eh? So, I'm not a "blogger", but I figured I should try something new every now and again. Never know unless you try...
